When I was When I was., The Evening Post, 1915. 

As a part of the exhibition, Making Peace, 27 April - 2 May 2015, Thistle Hall, Wellington. 

A site-specific and time-specific installation to coincide with the the Centenary of ANZAC Campaign in Gallipoli Peninsula in WWI.

Five issues of The Evening Post of Wellington from exactly 100 years ago were reproduced and presented daily in the front window space. Only one issue from the exact same date was made available to read each day. (No paper was published on Sundays 100 years ago (2 May 1915) so all 5 copies were presented on the last day of the exhibition.)

"The standout was Asumi Mizuo’s ‘When I Was When I Was’, a simple re-presentation of a copy of the Evening Post newspaper from Thursday the 29th of April 1915, with easy chair and table. In one window a notice from the paper was posted offering the “Imperial governments’” congratulations on New Zealand’s “splendid gallantry and magnificent achievement” in The Dardanelles. It is so out of sync with our current understanding, it reads at first as a joke.
" In the other window was a copy of the Evening Post’s front page. Full of the hustle and bustle of ads for plumbers, child-minders and coal for winter heating, the war is barely mentioned. You become aware of how similar the everyday needs of life were to ours now. Sitting down with the newspaper inside the gallery it isn’t until you get to page seven that news from the front appears, shorn of all the dramatic illustrations and human-interest stories you’d expect today.
"100 years ago in a time of terrible tragedy the newspaper kept the peace by careful control of information. Yet it also reflected that life went on, without uniformity, with a great many different individual experiences and stories. "

The Art Hotel as a scene of reading: Wystan Curnow and Dino Chai

The event this publication partially records was part of the project Bare walls, empty room, a six exhibition series curated by Layla Tweedie-Cullen and Jacob Barratt-Boyes with Nat Cheshire, presented in 2012 at split/fountain. 

For the third instalment Dino Chai made his architectural intervention with stacked bricks and sweeps of silver foil to resemble neither hotel lobby nor gallery reception, but perhaps evoking their shared, defining emptiness and constructed neutrality. He created it as the stage for two evening readings by Curnow.

WORK-BOOK - text contribution

For the possible no end, a text contribution on temporary-housing and shelter, and act of rebuilding.

WORK-BOOK brings together diverse responses to the idea of temporary structures with the specific intent of promoting critical research and experimental forays between the fields of art, design and architecture. The publication includes a manual for constructing makeshift furniture, several essays and visual contributions that focus on what it means to operate in either the transitional city of Christchurch, the aftermath of the natural disasters in Japan, or the implications and qualities inherent to a temporary form. WORK-BOOK embraces transitional and temporary methodologies and speculates on the latent possibilities that may exist in opportunistic, collaborative, short-term initiatives.

By the book is a visual survey of the long-gone 'today'. Houses, shops, cities, villages and ways of people's life, you will find a mixture of lost and unchanged things between the pages of publications that are at least 40 year-old. 

Organised by artist Asumi Mizuo for S/F, this project presents a broad range of photography from some unexpected sources.

On loan from the private collections of Auckland-based artists and photographers, and including Mizuo’s collection of vintage photogravure print books from Japan.

Display tables by Eleanor Cooper and Melanie Kueng.

Ulex vexillum @ The Sculpture Park

Gorse was once introduced by European settlers to New Zealand and quickly took over North Island much like the settlers themselves. Now regarded as a pest plant, the plant is readily removed from farms as well as the Sculpture Park.
A large gorse-dyed linen flag is suspended between two pine trees on the hill looking out to the Waikato plain. The setting incorporates the Waikato farmland as a borrowed scenery into the installation. Ulex vexillum breaches the boundary between the farm and arboretum, and extends the inquiries into the layers of human interventions to the park and beyond.

Ulex vexillum is a site-specific installation for the exhibition curated by Kim Paton for the Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum.

Drawing a Sea @ Art in the Dark 2011

Drawing a Sea is a site-specific light installation that traces an imaginary shoreline with string lights that will rest 40 metres above sea level on the ground of Western Park. This height set out for the lights reflects the highest rise of water (run-up) in sea-level recorded in a small cove in Miyako City in the recent Japanese tsunami.

Even with an abundance of video footage of the tsunami engulfing the land, it is hard to grasp what people actually went through on that day. The artist hopes that as the audience wander in and out of the surface of this imaginary tsunami, the incomprehensible will become comprehensible.
